하회탈은 우리나라 탈 가운데 유일하게 국보(제121호, 병산탈 2개 포함)로 지정된 귀중한 우리의 문화유산이며, 가면미술 분야에서
세계적인 걸작으로 평가받고 있다. 하회탈은 주지(2개), 각시, 양반, 선비, 중, 백정, 초랭이, 할미, 이매, 부네, 총각, 별채, 떡다리로
모두 14개가 있었다고 한다. 그러나 언제부터인지 별채, 총각, 떡다리 탈은 분실되어 전해지지 않는다.
<하회탈 전설>
"옛날 한 마을의 허도령은 꿈에 서낭신의 계시를 받고 탈을 만들기 시작했다. 탈을 만드는 곳에는 다른 사람들이 출입할 수 없도록
금줄을 치고 매일 목욕재계를 하며 정성을 들이는 가운데 탈을 만들고 있었다. 그런데 허도령을 몹시 사모하는 처녀가 사모하는 마음을
억누르지 못하고 허도령의 얼굴이나마 가만히 들여다보고 싶어서 어느 날 금기를 깨고 금줄을 넘어 들어가 탈막 안을 엿보았다. 입신의
경지에서 탈을 깎고 있던 이매탈은 제대로 마무리할 수 없어 결국 턱이 없는 채로 전해지고 있다."고 한다.
하회탈 제작에 사용된 나무는 모두 오리나무이며, 제작 시기는 대략 고려 중엽쯤으로 추정되고 있다. 하회탈은 하회마을에 보관되어
오다가 1964년 국보로 지정되어 현재는 국립중앙박물관에 소장되어 있다.
<일반적인 형태 및 특징>
하회별신굿탈놀이에 사용되는 하회탈은 국보 제121호로 지정되어 있다. 백정탈은 원래 희광이라 불렀다고 한다. 희광이는 신분상
고려시대에는 사형을 집행하는 망나니였다.
놀이에서는 살생을 하고는 늘 죄의식 속에서 살다가 천둥벼락이 치는 날 결국은 미쳐버리는 역할이다. 지금의 놀이에서는 소를 잡으며
우랑과 염통을 꺼내 주위 사람들에게 사라고 권유하다가 곧이어 낙뢰의 효과음(풍물)이 나올 때 비틀거리며 헤매다가 퇴장하는 역할이다.
얼굴형은 이마가 다른 탈에 비해 크게 비뚤어져 있으며 작은 혹이 달렸고 눈꼬리는 뒤로 치켜 올라갔다. 콧날은 다른 탈에 비해 좁으며
입은 아랫입술이 앞으로 튀어나와 있으며 이마와 양볼에 주름이 많이 나 있다. 험악해 보이는 표정이며, 얼굴을 뒤로 젖히면 실성한 웃음
으로 보이는 표정을 짓는다. 전체적인 얼굴형이 부드럽다고는 할 수 없으며 이마나 아래 턱 또는 볼의 돌출 된 선, 코의 모양은 대체로 관상학에서 각형(
角
形
)으로 분류된다.
하회별신굿탈놀이에서 백정의 동작은 `심술궂다 백정걸음`이라고 전한다. 소를 잡고 그 소의 염통과 우랑을 꺼내 관중에게 사라고 하는 심술궂은 백정의 역할에 합당하다. 춤사위는 몽두리춤, 즉 뻣뻣한 동작의 춤사위이다.
